The Maya believed caves were sacred, and served a passage between this world and the underworld, or Xibalba in the Maya language. You’ll get a headlamp so you’ll be able to illuminate the incredible interior of this beautiful cave as you float. The caves are totally dark, but your headlamp will help you illuminate the nooks and crannies where bats and spiders live. Visitors also get to see plenty of interesting natural formations, including stalactites and stalagmites.
Your tour begins with a 30 to 40-minute hike. This is a fairly easy hike, but you should still make sure to wear sturdy, closed-toed water shoes or sneakers. Once you reach the creek, you’ll hop in an innertube and make your way through the cave at a gentle pace.
