The ceremonial center is only 1 mile (1.6 km) away after crossing the ferry on the Mopan River at San Jose Succutz.
Climb up the largest pyramid, El Castillo. It rises 130 feet (39 m) above the main plaza and offers an impressive panoramic view of Cayo District and nearby Guatemala. After the tour, you will head back down to San Jose Soccutz village where you will have lunch.

Home to the second largest Mayan pyramid in Belize, Xunantunich is one of the most impressive Mayan sites in Belize. The site is composed of three major ceremonial plazas surrounded by numerous temples, palaces, and house mounds. Xunantunich is located 8 miles (13 km) southwest of San Ignacio on the Western Highway.

really enjoyable tour -- go early in the am as we did to avoid the crowds.
Steven was an awesome tour guide. Due to time of year, Xunantunich was not overly crowded so we had much of it to ourselves. The hand cranked ferry was very cool to see in operation. The pontoon tour was great. It came with lunch and swimming if you wanted to. We even picked up some Belikins to make the ride more enjoyable.
Edgar was a great tour guide— his knowledge of the sites history, as well as the adjacent archaeological network, is outstanding. He gave a good perspective to the how and why of the site. The site itself is awe-inspiring. Photos do not do justice to its grandeur.

Take this tour to see the site that the Maya called “Stone Woman.” You’ll reach Xunantunich via a ferry ride down the Mopan River, followed by a short hike through the jungle. Xunantunich spreads out over a couple of miles, but the central site is fairly compact.
